#IoT at #VMworld with #Mimi #Spier

Hello all,

by the two General sessions we have attended this year at VMworld event in Barcelona, we all understand that everything will be digital in the near future.

The IoT allows objects to be sensed and/or controlled remotely across existing network infrastructure, creating opportunities for more direct integration of the physical world into computer-based systems, and resulting in improved efficiency, accuracy and economic benefit.

Speaking about this, VMware is working a lot, with some other partners (like ABB), to leverage Internet of Things (aka IoT), where normal devices like veicles, refrigerators, cameras, robots and even buildings, will be connected to the Internet to facilitate our life.

This approach will leverage also the subject of security, if we think about the recent attack to DynDNS done using IoT devices that spawned a DDoS attack, "blackouting" part of the Internet.
During the conference I've the pleasure to meet Mrs. Mimi Spier working for VMware as Sr. Director and Head of GTM Business Development Marketing Internet of Things, who guided me into the IoT pavillon that was present at VMWorld 2016 events.

She explains me in a brief interview what VMware are doing to empower the IoT experience for the enterprises and the users.

When IoT is augmented with sensors and actuators, the technology becomes an instance of the more general class of cyber-physical systems, which also encompasses technologies such as smart grids, smart homes, intelligent transportation and smart cities. Each thing is uniquely identifiable through its embedded computing system but is able to interoperate within the existing Internet infrastructure. Experts estimate that the IoT will consist of almost 50 billion objects by 2020.

The interview is splitted in three videos: two with Mrs. Mimi Spier as interviewed and one with VMware employee explaining me in depth the concept of Intelligent Building.

So please, sit back and put your video at full resolution (underground noise may require an headphone) and enjoy the journey through IoT.

Thanks Mrs Mimi Spier for explanations and approving the posting of these videos in this post

Day 3: #OpenStack on #VMware - real customer cases #vmworld2016

Hi all,
with VMware integrating Openstack in his infrastructure, I was curious about the experiences of customers leveraging this technology.
So I scheduled this Customer Panel to gets some insight from organisations using this technology already and I record the interview for who wants to watch it.
All the customers report great flexibility in the solution and the feasibility of leveraging VMware infrastructure features combined with OpenStack features.
a lot of emphasis has been given to the easiness of patching the integrated OpenStack environment, somewhat difficult in stand alone OpenStack infrastructure.

the video has been divided in two parts, and the session was quite long so, if you want to ear from real world deployment experience, sit back and relax, put the video in full screen mode and listen :)

Day 2: #General #Session at #VMworld 2016

Hi all,
19 October General Session starts with Mr. Sanjay Poonen, head of global Marketing VmWare,
enforcing the message sent yesterday by Pat Gelsinger that all will be digital:

Then it’s time on stage for CTO Ray O’Farell who spoke about SDDC: Horizon, vRealize (vSphere + NSX + VSAN), VMware integrated OpenStack, vSphere 6,5 integrated Containers

the challenges of digital transformation are:
  • more complex environment
  • new cybersecurity threats
  • supporting existing / new apps / services / frameworks

this can be done with vSphere 6.5
  • simplified experience
    • vCenter Server Appliance (built in HA < 5 mins RTO
    • simplified patching
    • new Rest APIs
    • simple migration from Windows to appliance
    • superior performances and scale HTML5 vSphere client (modern, responsive, easy to use)
  • built in security
    • secure access with audit quality logging
    • secure infrastructure with secure boot
    • secure data with VMs encryption
  • universal app platform

Then on stage Yanbing Li speaking about the importance of VSAN for SDDC. along with Integration, management with intelligent automation, workloads (business critical /containers)

New capabilities in VSAN 6.5 are:
  • direct connect 2-node deployment, iSCSI access for physical workloads
  • coming soon: data encryption

Network virtualisation
  • Security with micro-segmentation , each application gets its own firewall
  • automation help streamline the deployment of networks, and network related services
  • application continuity (70% faster, based on customers experience)

Then the keynote focus on Photon Platform that resolves most of the problems delivering containers
  • controlling cost
  • controlling compliance
  • and much more

Day 1: Intro for Pat #Gelsinger #Keynote #VMWorld 2016

Hello all,
a theatrical intro for General Session on Day 1 at VMWorld 2016.
After the Intro the first part of Pat Gelsinger 's keynote

Attendance at #VMWorld 2016

Hello all,
as told in the previous post, the attendance to this year event is very high: you can see the crown in the following video.

Day 1: Tuesday keynote #vmworld

Hello all,
General session started with some data on attendance on this year event (13k) and thanks to gold and platinum sponsors, and the importance of inclusion.

Pat Gelsinger continues the keynote with the explanation that there is no traditional business VS digital business. All should be digital business today.

Then he give a brief history of the growth of the cloud computing vs traditional IT and forecasts for coming years
Then it' s the time of devices proliferation connected and IoT devices. The estimation is 18 Billion by the 2021. So cloud will be a force that expand investment in IT.

The session continues with the introduction of the enormous impact vSphere 6.5, also for the environment, management, compute, network (NSX) and storage.
In the near future all business units of a firm will "be" IT

To leverage the SDDC we have to move to hybrid cloud (vRealize) with VMWare  cross-cloud architecture: Vmware cloud foundation

VMware partner with AWS and Mr. Mike Clayville hops on stage to explain the integration between the two firms: avoid CAPEX for customers are the big use case. Bursty workloads is another great use case for this hybrid architecture.

A great feature of VMware+AWS is the dynamic DRS, that scale out the VMware cluster seamlessly, if unbalanced.

#VMWorld 2016 started. Day 0

Hi all,
I'm waiting to board on my plane to Barcelona.
From tomorrow will be sessions full immersion and hands on lab days.
I'm very curious about the tomorrow keynote: what we have to expect?

The IT is changing faster and faster: clouds initiatives, hyperconvergence, containers, devops and all is going to be software defined, OpenStack... what will VMware propose this year? What do you think? Post comments!

Have you scheduled your agenda and booked sessions? If not it's better that you do it right now: login and browse the content catalog and select your interests.

Moreover, I would like to remember you that VMWorld is a technical event and needs to be attended with the right "netiquette"; I wrote about this also last year, please re-read the post...

Then enjoy! Take with you comfortable shoes... about 10-15 miles walked per day...

See you there
