HOWTO vmotion From Dell 2850 to Dell 2950 (woodcrest)

A VmWare community forum article about VMotioning between two different Dell physical server.

Thanks mcallistera!

We bought some new Dell 2950's with the woodcrest (5160 or 51xx) chipset to replace our "old" Dell 2850's. Our desire was to vmotion all our VMs from the old gear to the new gear as we replaced each server. Virtual Center dashed our hopes as we quickly ran into "CPU of destination host is incompatible" problems when attempting the VMotion. As most people know, vmotion between CPU's with different instructions can be problematic and there are apparently a couple of different approaches to overcome the incompatibility. The first approach: Tell virtual center to not test for CPU compatibility. This is NOT supported, and from what I've read VMWare support will be upset if you open a service request after doing this. But... According to this thread http://www.vmware.com/community/thread.jspa?messageID=372856 you simply put [ read all... ]

Links to interesting Configuration Whitepapers

There are some new useful links in VMTN.

One has been posted by Bogomil Balkansky Director of Product Marketing and it's about "Power and cooling savings with VMware Infrastructure".
The datacenter has typically been a quiet, and face it, boring, place: rows upon rows of identical computers and the droning sound of air conditioning – not exactly the place where journalists look for spectacular drama. And you want to keep it that way – if things are working as they should, no one needs to know what is going on in the datacenter, or that such a place even exists.
So why has the datacenter come out of its anonymity, and is suddenly filling

VMware ESX Server 2.5.3 Upgrade Patch 2 (for 2.5.3 Systems Only)

From VMware site the release of the upgrade patch for ESX 2.5.3

This patch is for ESX Server 2.5.3 and addresses the following issues:

  • Bug 66534 VMs BSOD with STOP: c0000221 Unknown Hard Error during VMotion across HP Blades -->This patch includes a change in SCSI error handling. Prior to this patch, certain SCSI behaviors resulted in an error condition being passed to guest operating systems. After ESX Server 2.5.3 Upgrade Patch 2 is applied, the guest operating system will be passed a retry for its I/O rather than receiving the error condition.
  • This patch refines runt-packet padding behavior in order to accommodate relatively rare circumstances where Ethernet frames are dropped and/or flagged as suspicious by a network security appliance.
  • This patch fixes a bug that caused the VMware Management Interface not to display some groups defined in /etc/group. This is also fixed for ESX Server 2.1.3 in ESX Server 2.1.3 Upgrade Patch 1.
  • This patch enables the use of non-alphanumeric characters in passwords in the VMware Management Interface without generating an error message. This is also fixed for ESX Server 2.1.3 in ESX Server 2.1.3 Upgrade Patch 1. For additional information, refer to KB 2098.
  • This patch enables support for the Sun StorageTek FLX-380 storage array.

TCP/IP Offload Engine relieves CPU burden

By Alan Baldus (from embedded computing design)

Today’s CPUs are overwhelmed by Ethernet traffic, with an increasing amount of CPU cycles being consumed by TCP/IP packet processing. An additional CPU can be added to share the load when this imbalance causes application performance to suffer, but this is an expensive solution with several other drawbacks. In this article, Alan discusses how the addition of a Network Accelerator Card (NAC) with an integrated TCP/IP Offload Engine (TOE) can relieve the burden on the CPU.

File / Print / DNS Servers: Getting Started with Virtual Infrastructure

From VMware site a whitepaper from Foedus

In this white paper, we will discuss the value of adding virtual infrastructure to the organization to support various staple services such as File and Printing services and DNS. Leveraging VMware ESX Server's iSCSI support, virtual file servers reach new capabilities while keeping costs affordable at the same time. The scalability of virtual networking support in VMware ESX Server 3.0 lends itself especially well in high-bandwidth scenarios when coupled with new processor technology from Intel. New features of ESX Server 3.0 such as clustering, consolidated backup and Distributed Availability Services mean you can ensure 100% availability of file and printing services without the complicated setup of Windows clusters or 3rd party products.

iSCSI Review

Vladamir Savyak article

With the release of the Fibre Channel and SAN based on it the storage world staked on a network access to storage devices. Almost everyone announced that the future belonged to the storage area networks. For several years the FC interface was the only standard for such networks but today many realize that it's not so. The SAN based on the FC has some disadvantages, which are the price and difficulties of access to remote devices. At present there are some initiatives which are being standardized; they are meant to solve or diminish the problems. The most interesting of them is iSCSI.[...]
